By now, most of us have had it with this story. As reported on Yahoo news, and every other place on earth, former Milwaukee Police Officer Oscar Ayala-Cornejo decided to lie about his citizenship to allow himself to become a police officer. I can understand wanting a steady job to support your family, etc. Really, much of the time that is what gets me to work each night.
Now, because of his compelling motivations, there is a bit of support coming his way in the form of “critics” who think the deportation action was too harsh.
Too harsh?
Sorry folks, but cops can’t be liars. Think about this. There is a real issue here not in Ayala wanting to work (I am confident he is a good person with pure motives), but in his falsifying a government application to get the job.
It seems like we have watchdogs drooling at the feet of anyone wearing a badge these days. I wonder if the concerned liberals — sorry — citizens would be so upset if this officer’s name was Muhammad?
Just a thought…

Isn’t that a federal crime? Would it not be proper for him to be jailed as a result?

Excellent question. I think the crime would be a state one, however someone else might have more information on that. Anyone out there?

In theory, I agree with you, but it’s harder to in practice. A guy who would go to that kind of lengths, to get into a position where he risks his life, protecting people who would throw him out of the country, is exactly the sort of guy we WANT for incoming citizens. (If that makes sense.) He wasn’t coming across the border to use services without returning the commitment; he was living as a citizen and going above and beyond the duties of one.
I know making exceptions would weaken what’s left of our immigration system, but it’s a damned shame this one worked out this way.

I actually agree completely. The problem is that lots of people come here lawfully and wait a long time to become cops (and firemen, and teachers, etc.) and the message to them must remain absolute. I guess the correct fix is to make the lawful immigration process less draconian and more efficient. Thanks for the opinion…

Good point here–
Draconian– great word- severe–
who are you besides Mr. Officer? Joseph Wambaugh? lol
And to be meek here– this was the first time I had heard this– living in a cave does not help with stimuli–
And I am even behind schedule here from when this was initially posted?
Can’t wait to hear about what you think of Hillary winning tonight? If you do–
I am almost half way through the 40 plus stories from the police– I will have to check these out– I am going through them too fast– thanks- you are very cool–

True enough, Kodiak…I am torn as well on these things. He did a good job and just wanted to continue. But in the end it is a job of honesty…
