Our Laser Marking Machine

I own a business that sells specialty items like nick-knacks, custom key chains, and custom jewelry and gifts. We order our supplies wholesale for some items, but others we prefer to create ourselves. We have any cool machines that help us create our projects, including an engraving machine. Well, a month ago our engraving machine had failed. It just stopped working out of nowhere and we could not fix it. We ended up purchasing a brand new laser marking machine within a week of when the old one broke.

We purchased out machine from Jamieson Laser. The process of selecting a laser and receiving it was not too difficult. It took a few weeks to get our hands on the new engraver, but that was to be expected. Once we received it, the setup was pretty easy. I had to read the manual that came with it a few times before I was comfortable using it on my own. That was also something I expected since I am not too mechanically inclined.

I love our new laser engraver. Once I learned how to use it things went smoothly. I am very surprised at how easy the machine is to use. The new machine makes the old one seem like it was made in the stone ages. The new laser engraver was completely computer driven with some high-tech software. I love just going into our shop and seeing what new things I can create with it. So far I have made a line of earrings, beads for bracelets, some cute little jewelry boxes, bookmarks, and of course some little nick-knacks. I think our next big purchase will be a laser cutter with all of the frills.

Another factor which may affect the cost of cosmetology school is travel and living expenses. You need to decide if it is better to find a school close to home, commute or live on or near campus to save money.

Gutters – Protect Your Home’s Foundation

A lot of the time when a person purchases a home they over look one very crucial thing that all homes should have – gutters. Gutters play a very important role in home preservation. Gutters help by directing excessive rain water away from the building so it does not build up on the ground below the roof line.

Homes that do not have gutters installed may find that their home has suffered foundation damage. This damage occurs because without some sort of drainage between the roof and the ground below, water accumulate at the edge of the house, causing damage to the foundation and exterior of the home. How Laser Machines Work

Laser cutting machines as the name suggests, uses lasers to cut into specified materials. This is achieved by generating a laser beam due to stimulation of a laser medium or gain medium. The stimulation of the molecular or electronic transitions will drop to a lower energy lever from the high state that it was and that will activate the laser beam. The beam will then be reflected with the use of internal mirrors until it reaches the energy levels that allow it to focus in one directed beam of homochromous light. Direction is often achieved by strategically placed internal mirrors or fiber optics which guides the light to a lens where it can then be focused on the item to be cut.

Lasers typically cut from the edge with ease, but if you would want to start cutting from the middle of an item, you would need to use the laser to bore a hole at the required starting point first. There are diverse types of laser machines even though they all pretty much cover the same general requirement. The fact is that there are many ways to cut sever materials with a laser which includes melting, burning, vaporizing, engraving, etc.

Melting

This is normally referred to as melt and blow or fusion cutting. It is a process that utilizes high pressures of gas to blow away the melted material as the laser melts it. Instead of heating the material to the point of evaporation, it is simply melted to a point and the high pressure gas blows it away thus eliminating the need for the laser heat to be turned up any higher, especially if the material type may react unfavorably to high levels of heat. This is often used to cut metals.

Vaporizing

As the name suggests, this cutting involves high levels of heat where the material is heated by the beam to a point where it penetrates and creates a hole. This is often used on certain types of plastic and wood.

Burning

This is also called flame cutting which works similarly to a torch with the exception of oxygen blown fire. Instead of fire, the laser beam does the burning and it is often used to cut thick, solid metals such as carbon steel.

Insulated glass, or IG, is composed of two or more glass panes separated by a type of spacer bar which is sealed against air and water.  This air that is held between the panes becomes an insulating barrier. This insulation factor is often enhanced with the addition of a highly viscose gas that reduces heat transfer like argon or krypton.  Most window systems use an insulated glass component in their construction.

What are Steam Generators?

Steam is extremely useful in several applications. Steam has been used to drive locomotive engines and is sometimes used in nuclear facilities to generate electricity. A steam generator is a machine used to change water into steam. Commercial applications use large containers several feet high which store large volumes of water. When heated, the pressures of the steam can reach up to 350 pounds per square inch. This steam is then guided onto turbines to make electricity when used in an electrical plant. Locomotives use the steam guided onto gears which rotates, making the engine run.

Household Usage
Also called a boiler, these generators have been in use for at least 120 years. They have also had several different applications in the home. Boilers generate steam for households in winter, thus raising the humidity and the temperature inside the home. These generators pipe the water through a series of tubes where it is heated and the steam then enters the room. Generators are very good to have in winter and are slightly more effective than a fireplace. As long as the boiler is kept in good condition the costs will also be low.

Commercial Usage
The steam generator is also used in nuclear facilities to generate electricity. It has the similar tubular setup as almost all other applications, but the steam acts on a turbine which creates the electricity from the rotational energy. These boilers pass the water through pipes on one side then heat it through interaction with nuclear fission. The steam boilers at a nuclear facility have to be extremely rigid to cope with the heating and cooling of the water, the steam and the air in the tubes as well. Boilers are old technology which still has a lot of relevance today and is still being used all around the world in various capacities.

Laundering Tips for Organic Baby Clothes

Dry using the air only cycle or low heat settings. Organic cotton clothing is usually made from 100% cotton, so there is a natural tendency for a garment to shrink in the dryer when dried at higher heat settings.  Better yet, hang dry clothing outdoors on a clothesline.  Hanging clothing out to dry conserves the energy that would have been expended using the dryer.  Drying clothing outside brings a natural freshness to the fabric as well.

Wash with environmentally-friendly products.  Look for detergents and soaps that are phosphate- , fragrance- and dye-free, if possible.

Soften and control static with natural materials. Many fabric softener sheets used in the dryer can contain harsh chemicals. Instead, shape tin foil into a ball shape and put it in your dryer load to cut down on static cling.  Also, some companies market PVC-free dryer balls that gently separate and fluff clothes. You can insert a soy-based wax or essential oil paper fragrance stick into these products if you want the addition of a light scent.

Make your own eco-friendly detergent.  Using rose water, lavender water or lemon juice in the tub or washing machine, you can create an effective organically-based wash for clothes.   Because it can act as a helpful bleaching and stain removal agent, lemon juice is a good choice for light and white clothes.

What’s Wrong With Cops These Days?

There is a saying “A police officer’s job is always viewed as to what degree of wrong it is done”. An entire department can do the job 100% well with no complaints or problems but a police officer on the other side of the US messes up and all the police officers are viewed with suspicion and, sometimes, contempt even though 99.9% of them had nothing to do with it. And yet, if a police officer looks sideways at a citizen that fits all the factors of suspicious behavior (even if 99.9% of the time someone with those factors are involved in criminal behavior) it’s called “Profiling” and is “bad”.

People who have little knowledge how the job is really done or what occurs during the job feel very free to criticize or out right bash on police officers who may have done nothing wrong…yet still the shots are taken. I’ve personally seen where officers involved in a shooting were hammered by the public even though the suspect had a gun and pointed it at the officers. People were sure that if the officer’s just hadn’t shot him then he wouldn’t have shot at them and he could have been talked down.

People complain about the DUI laws but may not have had a friend scraped off the front of an SUV driven by a drunk…or had someone personally thank them for getting a drunk off the street. DUI laws have helped and anyone who thinks free taxi’s would solve the problem have never worked a New Years Eve when there are free taxi’s and still the drunks get in their cars and drive. The US drunk driving laws are very tame and lenient compared to most other countries. Try Germany….they have a much more strict policy on DUI’s…and less DUI problems.

As to drug laws…I personally have met some people stoned enough to attack me and a fellow police officer. Perhaps he was one of the few who become aggressive on pot…it was strange (and yes, marijuana was the only drug in his system). To me the biggest problem with legalized marijuana is, if it’s allowed to be smoked in public, the second hand smoke from pot can get a “non-smoker” stoned…unlike the fumes from alcohol. And if you’re suggesting the legalization of other “harder” drugs…that I would argue hard against.

As to speeding and other traffic laws…they are the easiest not to get in trouble with. Just follow the rules of the road! And yet, people violate those rules and then get upset when they are given a ticket. Pull a kid out from under a car that was going too fast and couldn’t stop in time and then tell me speed laws are no good. Yes, we could have tougher responses to various other violations..but often the problem is not with the police officer’s but is with the Justice system (i.e.-the courts and prosecutors) and yet it is the police who get blamed. If you don’t like the laws work on getting them changed…don’t blame the police for doing their job and enforcing them.

I think the biggest problem for Cops is that, after a certain point, they get tired of being the scapegoat for societies problems and being told how they should be doing their jobs. They get thrown into a world (yes, by choice) where they see things on a regular basis that they pray their children will never see so they often develop a wall so it all doesn’t “get to” them. After a while they can start to buy into the “Us and Them” feeling…not really good and bad, but “cops and those who don’t understand cops or the job” and they start to feel unappreciated and isolated. If they don’t activily fight that feeling then it can become pervasive and then it grows. The best solution I found is to get out of the car and talk to people (if you can). Most people are hard working people trying to make it in the world. Unfortunately it’s not the good one’s cops deal with most of the time.
