I have posted in a few areas about cops and blogging. I have also confessed to all of you that I do this as much for myself, as a form of therapy, as I do for the blogosphere. That is okay, and I believe it makes my posts all the more honest.

I just ran across an idea I should have thought of at this cool site. Cops Who Blog is an online community of cop bloggers. Any one is welcome to look around. The company, NING, lets you set up your own community, too. Communities could be formed for knitters, motorcycle owners, or cat lovers, each with a small niche on the net. Pretty cool.

Policing Might Enter The 21st Century Yet!

Hello and welcome to 21st century policing! I have always been interested (obviously) in how social media, blogging, etc. was going to affect my profession. Then I come across a revolutionary blog at this address. Kudos to the authors, who are blogging about police blogging!

I hope their site is a huge success. If the managers of even a tiny percentage of our departments can read – and learn – from these folks, then perhaps we can stop dragging, and start accompanying, our leaders onto the web. It truly will be better for cops, better for communities, and better for the web.

Best Police Blogs Contest

Police Blog Carnival Is One Week Away!

As you all may have seen in this prior post, I decided to host a blog carnival. I confess I had never heard of the idea until that week, but it immediately sounded like a great idea. Essentially, I advertised my “carnival” at the blog carnival website. By doing so, interested bloggers in the law enforcement / police arena were invited to submit entries for posting in a central location. That location will be on this special page within The Philosophical Cop!

I have already received half a dozen or so pieces, and I hope to make this a semi-annual or even monthly event, where the best cop bloggers can submit interesting and enlightening work. Hope you will come visit on January 15th, when the inaugural Cops and Lawmen Blog Carnival kicks off!

After slightly more than a decade of policing a major city, I have changed. I note at the outset that not all of these transformations please me. I look at people — just about all people, differently now. Some of the good guys don’t seem so good; some of the bad guys a bit less evil, and the line between the two is more blurry than ever.

And there is me. I am different now, too. It happens, I suppose, to many professionals. Lawyers, doctors, firefighters, soldiers all see their fellow humans through a slightly distorted lens. However the police officer brand of this distortion seems to be particularly intense, with great consequences (some good, some not so good) that shape our world view long after the end of our watch.

My mission here is unapologetic and simple: Education and understanding. The vast majority of cops do excellent and heroic work in the vast majority of situations. Sometimes we fail. In either case, I think police incidents are often misunderstood, misrepresented, and unfairly characterized. Hopefully we can work on that together. I expect many readers will not agree with many things that I say. I know that not all of my posts will please you. Let’s talk about those.

In the end, we can learn something from each other. Welcome.
